Building Stairway Evacuation Chairs

With more businesses than any other region in the UK, London is home to thousands of offices, factories, bars, restaurants and hotels.

High rise buildings have become a familiar part of London’s cityscape, and while every building has its own unique risks, when it comes to fire safety, multi storey buildings present a number of unique challenges.

Some of these include:

  • Multiple floors and stairways
  • Longer escape times
  • Greater vertical distance to travel
  • Greater number of people to evacuate

In a densely populated, built up city such as London, it is essential that organisations provide the appropriate training, equipment and resources to ensure everyone is protected in the case of a fire. An essential part of this is the provision of an evacuation chair.

What is an evacuation chair?

An evacuation chair is a specially designed device which enables the safe descent of stairs in the event of an emergency.

Evacuation chairs are indispensable in evacuating those who are unable to leave a multi-storey building themselves in a situation such as a fire. A person may need assistance evacuating for a number of reasons including disability, pregnancy, injury, mental health or other medical condition.

Fire Risk Solutions offer a range of evacuation chairs which have been designed for comfort and easy operation on fire escapes and stairways.

Legislation

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 states that in a workplace environment, it is the legal duty of a ‘responsible person’ to provide a safe means of evacuation for those who are less mobile in the event of an emergency.

So, while businesses aren’t required by law to provide an evacuation chair, if you leave somebody behind in an emergency you would be breaching this legislation.

In addition to this, it is also unlawful to discriminate against anyone with a disability under the Disabled Discrimination Act 2005 and/or Equality Act 2010.

Leaving someone with a disability behind during an emergency is not only discriminatory, it is also very dangerous and, again, a clear breach of legislation.

Evacuation Chair Training

In order to ensure evacuation chairs can be used safely and effectively in the workplace, it is essential that businesses undertake appropriate training.

Fire Risk Solutions offer a dedicated training course which will provide you with everything you need to know should the need for an evacuation chair arise.

All of our courses are certificated and the Evacuation Chair Training course will provide you with all the information and training to ensure that you and your company complies with the Equality Act 2010.
