BS EN3 Explained

This is the new European Standard, covering portable Fire Extinguishers. It replaces the formed BS5423: 1987, which was withdrawn in 1997. Until then the UK had a unique colour coding system to identify the various Fire Extinguishers.

BS EN3 requires that at least 95% of the extinguishers body must be coloured red, allowing only 5% colour coded zones on the extinguisher.

Freely burning materials such as wood, paper, and textiles etc.

 

Class B Fires
Flammable liquids such as petrol, oil, and paints etc.

 

Class C Fires
Flammable gases such as methane and propane etc.

 

Class D Fires
Special metals.

 

Class F Fires
Freely burning materials such as wood, paper & textiles, cooking oils and fats

 

Electrical Hazards
Fire Protection Equipment that is safe for contact on fires involving all types of electrical equipment.

 

Water Fire Extinguishers

 

 

Water Extinguishers are suitable for Class A Fires caused by the combustion of burning materials such as paper, wood, textiles etc.

Available in 3, 6 or 9 litre format.

 

 

 

Foam Fire Extinguishers

 

 

Foam Extinguishers are ideal for both A & B class Fire risks. AFFF (Aqueous Film Forming Foam) is particularly suited to Class B Fire caused by the combustion of flammable liquids such as petrol, oils, fats, paints etc.

Available in 2 litre, 6 litre or 9 litre format.

 

 

CO2 Fire Extinguishers

 

 

Carbon Dioxide Extinguishers are especially suitable for office use on electrical equipment, creating minimal secondary damage.

Can also be used for Class B Fire risks caused by the combustion of flammable liquids such as petrol, oils, fats, paints etc.

Available in either 2Kg or 5Kg format.

 

Powder Fire Extinguishers

 

 

Powder Extinguishers are multipurpose, suitable for mixed Fire risk environments specially suited to Class B Fires caused by combustion of flammable liquids such as petrol, oils, fats, paints etc and Class C type Fires caused by flammable gases such as methane, and propane etc.

Available in 1Kg, 2Kg, 4Kg, 6Kg or 9Kg formats.

Class D fires involve combustible metals such as magnesium, aluminium, lithium, sodium, potassium and their alloys. Combustible metal fires are unique industrial hazards which require special fire extinguishers.

Available in 12Kg format.
